A New Orleans mayor appeals for aid, 1874.
“Nothing but large increase of resources for relief can prevent the horrors of famine and great loss of life. We need a million of dollars more. Details will be given by mail. LOUIS A. WILTZ, Mayor and Treasurer of Relief Fund.”
This is a very interesting piece and its premise could apply just as easily to classical music. The author should remember, however, that the enjoyment of fine arts has always been the province of the select few and not the general public. When the few were attending Mozart premieres, the general public was into songs with lyrics like these:
For staying while dinner is cold and hot And pudding and dumpling? burnt to pot, Burnt to pot, burnt to pot, Till pudding and dumpling’s burnt to pot. We’ll drink off our liquor while we can stand, And hey for the honour of old England, Old England, old England, And hey for the honour of old England !
